Opening conference of the project "De-mining Programme in the Areas Affected by Floods - Osijek-Baranja County", financed by the European Union within the IPA 2011 component

On May 19th, 2015, Central Finance and Contracting Agency for EU funds and projects and the Croatian Mine Action Centre have signed a contract worth almost four million euros for the implementation of the project "The De-mining Programme in the Areas Affected by Floods - Osijek-Baranja County" financed by the European Union funds under IPA Component I - Transition Assistance and Institution Building in 2011. This project is meant to demine 4 square kilometers of suspected hazardous area in the Osijek-Baranja County within the next few months. The total value of the project amounts to 3,992,314.00 euros. The European Union funded the project with 3,321,000.00 euros, and the rest of 671,314.00 euros is financed trough Republic of Croatia state budget. The project beneficiary is Croatian Mine Action Centre.

Osijek-Baranja County has 70.7 square kilometers of suspected hazardous area, which extends through 14 towns and municipalities. Noted project refers to demining project in the Osijek-Baranja County, that will clear an area of ​​3.977 million square meters of mine suspected areas within the inundation zone of the Drava river, which includes forest areas, sections, fire protection lanes and channels in the Jagodnjak, Darda and Petrijevci municipalities. Realization of this project will have an impact on improving economic and social conditions in the war-affected areas, as well as the sustainable development of rural areas and the development of rural economy. Also, it will enable implementation of preventive measures for protection against floods, fire and extreme droughts coupled with unhindered exploitation of forest areas and increased safety of the population in mentioned territories. From 1998 until today the EU has helped the process of demining in Croatia with more than 34 million euros and still continues to assist through pre-accession funds.
