The completion of demining of Vukovar – Srijem County


In the presence of Ante Sanader, Vice-President of the Croatian Parliament, Drago Prgomet, Envoy of the President of the Republic of Croatia, Božo Galić, the County Prefect of Vukovar-Srijem County, leadership of Croatian Mine Action Centre and other guests, Vukovar marked the conclusion of demining of Vukovar-Srijem County.

After the opening speeches and short presentation by Tomislav Ban, assistant director of CROMAC, who presented long process of mine removal, Dražen Jakopec, director of the Croatian Mine Action Centre presented the 'mine cleared certificate' to the Prefect of Vukovar-Srijem County.

County Prefect Galić pointed out that thanks to the good cooperation with the CROMAC and municipalities mayors and with the strong backing of the Croatian Government and the donors the great thing happened. He recalled that agricultural land and forests were areas that were most mined, and mine clearance was important to start the economy and that with the completion of demining activities they no longer have to allocate huge funds for this activity and the County can turn towards the development projects in agriculture and forestry.

Envoy of the President of the Republic, Member of Parliament Drago Prgomet, in his speech pointed out that minefields are result of the war, one of which resulted in killing civilians, and today's event is final point to such evil and creates conditions for economic recovery of the County that was deeply impoverished by war.

Vice President of the Croatian Parliament Ante Sanader said that the mines were a huge obstacle, especially for new investments, and therefore this is a great day which should mark the beginning of intensive development of the economy in this area.

Mine suspected area of Vukovar - Srijem County included the 19 cities and municipalities that is 63.3% of the total number of cities and municipalities of the County.

During the execution of demining activities 17,797 pieces of mines, of which 6,650 pieces of anti-personnel mines, 11,147 pieces of anti-tank mines and 7,246 pieces of various unexploded ordnance were found and destroyed.

Around 819 million kuna were invested in demining of Vukovar-Srijem County, of which the state budget participated with 53% of the total funds for demining, followed by a legal entities with a share of 20%, the World Bank with a share of 15% and donors with a share of 12%.

Of mines and unexploded ordnance in the area of Vukovar-Srijem County from 1996, 116 people were injured, of which 41 were fatal.
