Marking of the International Day of Mines Awareness and Assistance in Mine Action in Gospić

On the occasion of marking April 4 – International Day of Mines Awareness and Assistance in Mine Action this year's main celebration took place in Gospić in the organization of Croatian Government Office for Mine Action and Croatian Mine Action Centre, who organized aforementioned event together with partners Ministry of Interior, City of Gospić and GDHCK Gospić.

Programme started at Stjepan Radić Square where mine problem in Republic of Croatia was presented. At the same time, at the Hunting lodge, an education regarding the mine danger was held for the hunters from Lika-Senj County in organization of ˝Association for the support and encouragement of unity Croatia helps˝.

At the Cultural-informative center a press conference was held covering the subject of mine action system in the Republic of Croatia and raising awareness about the dangers of landmines which was attended by Milan Kolić, prefect of Lika-Senj County, Petar Krmpotić, mayor of the City of Gospić, Hrvoje Debač, Croatian Government Office for Mine Action, Dražen Jakopec, director of the Croatian Mine Action Centre, Maria Breber, director of the foundation "Croatia without Mines", Durđa Adlešić, president of the Association for the support and encouragement of unity "Croatia helps", Ivo Jakić, Department for prevention of the Police Directorate and Žarko Plevnik, author of the book "Red fićo", a book that is also promoted in the KIC whose sales revenue is intended for demining of mine suspected areas in Republic of Croatia.

At the Gospić’s main square an educative show for children titled "Bembo and friends" was held for the youngest visitors while several sitting volleyball matches were played in the organization of Disability Volleyball Club ''Zagreb'', where prefect Kolić, mayor Krmpotić and director Jakopec also participated.

CROMAC, Red Cross and Police Department presented mine action activities at their stands.

Also children's art works on the mine danger from primary schools "Remete" and "Vladimir Nazor" from Zagreb, as well as elementary school "dr. Jure Turić "Gospić were exhibited.

On behalf of the organizers we would like to thank everyone who contributed to yesterday's celebration and who contribute on a daily basis in order to raise awareness of the dangers of landmines.
