Marking of April 22 – The Planet Earth Day

On April 21, a day before the Planet Earth Day, Committee for demining of Lions District 126 Croatia, in the cooperation with Lions Club Beli Manastir, Croatian Mine Action Centre Regional Office East and Association of Winemakers, Winegrowers and Fruit Growers „Sveti Martin” from Beli Manastir has organized a lecture on mine danger that was held at the city hall in Beli Manastir.
The program consisted of several short lectures regarding the April 22 – The Planet Earth Day (history, first presentation of the idea on marking of the Planet Earth Day, on designed flag, on declaration of Mr. Joseph Alioto the mayor of San Francisco from 1969 who decided that the city and the vicinity of San Francisco will celebrate the Planet Earth Day) and regarding the mine danger which was delivered by the Head of the Regional Office East Mr. Dubravko Krušarovski.

Mr. Krušarovski explained to the audience the meaning of April 4 – International Day for Mine Awareness and Assistance in Mine Action and action ˝April – Month of Protection from Mines˝.

Furthermore, the mine problem in the world, Republic of Croatia, Osijek-Baranja County, mine action in Republic of Croatia and ways of demining and marking the mine suspected areas were presented as well.

At the marking of the Planet Earth Day, along with the friends and members of the Lions Club Beli Manastir, 30 citizens of Beli Manastir were also present there.

The Death and Injury of Deminers

On April 15, 2016 at 11:49 o'clock severe accident occurred that resulted with the death of Dražen Aleksić (39) an employee of the company BIOS-F Ltd. who worked on demining activities on the location of Lički Ribnik in the vicinity of Gospić. He died from explosion of PROM-1 (a bounding fragmentation antipersonnel mine). The late Dražen Aleksić was deminer for more than 10 years.

From fragments of the same mine deminers Antonio Cindrić (36) and Ivan Šolić (36) were injured, but their injuries are not dangerous and they are successfully recovering.

His sacrifice is binding for all those involved in mine action to continuously improve the system to bring the possibility of mine incidents to the minimum.

To everyone in the system it is always hard to accept the sad news of the death and the injuries of deminers.

The director and employees of CROMAC are expressing deep sympathy to the family and colleagues of the deceased.
